Udawalawa Wild Area

Udawalawe National Park lies on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces in Sri Lanka. It was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by construction of Udawalawe reservoir.

Udawalawe is an important habitat for Sri Lankan elephants,  which are relatively easy to see in their open habitats. Many elephants are attracted to the park because of Udawalawe reservoir, with a herd of about 250.

Many other mammals like rusty spotted cat, fishing cat, Sri Lankan axis deer are seen  here. Udawalawe is also a good birdwatching site for both endemic and migratory birds.
